Apohaqui Elementary Celebrates Literacy Week!

Apohaqui Elementary School’s Literacy Week was celebrated in a grand way this year! The students were treated to a visit from three Saint John Millrats players emphasizing that ‘The Most Important Thing is Education!’ There were Literacy Police patrolling the halls and ticketing people caught reading so they could be entered into a draw for Scholastic coupons. A large group of parents and grandparents turned out to join us for a Read-In event – the gym was abuzz with reading and sharing! A home activity sheet encouraged reading/writing/sharing at home. All classes participated in a story chain that will finish up this week and be published in our March Newsletter. A SPECIAL EDITION of our February Newsletter highlighted the French literacy and writing produced in our Intensive French class. We also established the Apohaqui Elementary Post Outlet this year. Students and staff (and some parents too!) were excited about writing to our AES students. Each were able to ‘mail’ their letters and notecards by placing them in the classroom mailboxes that were placed in the school lobby. Opening of the mail was a greatly anticipated event each day! The mailboxes have been so popular that we are going to continue it throughout the spring to encourage more ‘writing for a purpose’. We are also pleased to report that the Read-In has encouraged further interest in volunteer helpers coming to the school to read with students in the future. Literacy Week was indeed a successful and event-filled week at AES!
