Social Media Concerns - Communication Sent to Parents

Dear Parents,

RE:  Social Media Concerns

This letter is to make you aware that some of our students are engaging in cyber-bullying.  We have students on both sides of this coin: receiving messages as well as involved in the sending of deliberately hurtful messages.  While these incidents are not happening at school, the stress and social pressures are arriving at our doors when our students return to the school after a weekend or evening online.  We are looking for our parents to have conversations with their kids regarding their social media activities.  Of course, this message does not apply to every student in our building, but we thought it good information for any parent to have.  Our mission at Marshview is to engage students in a positive learning environment, and seek to provide diverse learning opportunities for all stakeholders – including our parents.  Please read over the attached information.

The news reminds us of the devastating impact of cyber bullying.  Whilst we hope those are isolated incidents, we will do everything we can to prevent the immense emotional damage caused by cyber bullying.  This is behaviour that is not tolerated at Marshview Middle School.

By sharing information regarding another individual online, it puts students in violation of Provincial Policy 703: Positive Learning and Working Environment, specifically section 6.3.

6.3.1 The following are examples of behaviours exhibited by any person that are viewed as extreme and unacceptable in the New Brunswick public school system:

cyber bullying - including, but not limited to, posting inappropriate material online, sending harassing, deliberate or repeated emails and posting items online without permission of those involved;

These behaviours represent a significant disruption to the learning and working environment, endanger others or significantly impair the operation of the school and the maintenance of a positive learning and working environment. These behaviours will normally result in the exclusion of a person from school property and, in the case of a student these behaviours will result in an immediate suspension, in addition to other interventions. In most cases, due to the gravity of these behaviours, their occurrence will require the involvement of law enforcement officers.

Please talk to your child about their activities on line.  Ask your child to see their phones and social media accounts and monitor posts.  Great information can be found at  or www.cybertip.caThis is also a reminder that most social media sites require users to be at least 13 years old.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs. Heather Dixon
