Beaverbrook School has had another successful school year. The School Improvement Plan goal we focused on came from the Effective School’s Framework #18- "There is a culture of reflection, evidence informed inquiry and innovation towards student growth." All teams worked to move along the Formative Assessment Learning Scale and plan to continue this next year. We also implemented ch.6 “Using Data to Inform Instruction” from Best Practices at Tier 1: Elementary to maximize student learning.

•Our K-2 Team chose to focus on descriptive and specific feedback by developing a continuum focusing on writing that is goal referenced, tangible, specific & personalized, timely, ongoing and consistent. Next year, this team plans to track the descriptive and specific feedback they are giving and to fully implement their writing continuum.

•Our Grade 3-5 Team chose to focus on Effective Formative Assessment Attribute #4- Self and Peer Assessment. Self and Peer Assessment informed the teacher’s instruction and planning and helped our students to think meta-cognitively about their own learning. This was achieved through the construction of a gr. 3-5 writing continuum where students match their writing to a place on the continuum and then to identify what their next step to improve in their writing should be. This team plans continue developing continuums for students in other subject areas given the success of the writing continuum, and to have students self-reflecting daily through self and peer assessments. Students will also talk more in classes next year, while teachers circulate to evaluate and facilitate effective learning.

•Grade 6-8 chose to increase their students’ exposure to non-fiction literature with the goal of students increasing their scores on a district benchmark literacy assessment called OCA. The team began by purchasing more non-fiction texts, creating a bank of higher-order inferential and evaluative questions for both fiction and non-fiction texts for students. They used these questions daily during our school wide intervention time along with their reading journals to respond to a variety of texts and genres. By the end of the year, this team was able to celebrate their students’ growth with respect to reading and responding to non-fiction texts. In the future this team plans to continue working with non-fiction texts in all subjects with a specific focus on inferential and evaluative skills with respect to reading and writing. Next year students will be encouraged to continue to self-reflect regarding their learning while teachers use formative assessment to inform all areas of their instruction.

Beaverbrook School’s Positive Learning and Working Environment Plan goal this year came from the Effective School’s Framework #6- "The school community is actively involved in creating and furthering and inclusive school environment." This has been successful through:

•All team members continuing to improve and immerse ourselves in a culture of respect as embodied by our school mission, vision and values.
•Staff verifying that all students have received recognition for success in assemblies or Magnificent Mondays and/or involved in school activities such as magical mornings, lunch intramurals, art therapy, soccer, the Terry Fox fundraiser, cheerleading, leadership, homework club, Lego robotics, school photography, reading room, Sistema, Partners for Youth, school drama production along with our breakfast and lunch programs.

•86% of K-2 students were involved in extra-curricular activities
•85% of gr. 3-5 students were involved in extra-curricular activities (20% involved in enrichment)
•79% of gr. 6-8 students were involved in extra-curricular activities

•Team 6-8 created a student inventory survey to help teachers pre-assess student strengths, interests and needs for the upcoming school year after working on their team’s Response to Intervention protocols. This helped teachers identify areas for potential new school engagement for students next year.

•Ongoing staff professional learning in Zones of Regulation, Trauma Informed Best Practices, SIOP & EAL Best Practices and Restorative Circles Training.
