NATIONAL INDIGENOUS HISTORY MONTH is June every year with
June 21st being
National Indigenous Peoples Day. Various schools will be embedding treaty
education, education for reconciliation and cultural teachings into the coming
GRADE 4 TREATY EDUCATION will be piloted in three schools in
our district. Stay tuned for this new curriculum in the fall! It builds upon
the Grade 3 Treaty Education that has already been implemented in schools this
MAKING OUR OWN DRUMS the traditional way with the Cultural
Coordinator from Fort Folly. Three schools were awarded a grant to use for
making drums, creating artwork and music with the drums and then competing
amongst themselves. Stay tuned for the excitement!
LEARNING ABOUT THE MI’KMAQ CULTURE with Culture Keepers, Artists
and Elders. Many students have been learning about the Mi’kmaq Culture in hands
on, experiential, authentic ways when teachers are teaming up with Mi’kmaq people
from Fort Folly, Riverview and Elsipogtog.
FLAG CERMONIES will be held in two schools with a partnership
with Fort Folly and Elder from Pabineau First Nation. This is a true honor and
we are so grateful for our community partners!
