First Nation Education News!

NATIONAL INDIGENOUS HISTORY MONTH is June every year with June 21st being National Indigenous Peoples Day. Various schools will be embedding treaty education, education for reconciliation and cultural teachings into the coming months.

GRADE 4 TREATY EDUCATION will be piloted in three schools in our district. Stay tuned for this new curriculum in the fall! It builds upon the Grade 3 Treaty Education that has already been implemented in schools this year.

MAKING OUR OWN DRUMS the traditional way with the Cultural Coordinator from Fort Folly. Three schools were awarded a grant to use for making drums, creating artwork and music with the drums and then competing amongst themselves. Stay tuned for the excitement!

LEARNING ABOUT THE MI’KMAQ CULTURE with Culture Keepers, Artists and Elders. Many students have been learning about the Mi’kmaq Culture in hands on, experiential, authentic ways when teachers are teaming up with Mi’kmaq people from Fort Folly, Riverview and Elsipogtog.

FLAG CERMONIES will be held in two schools with a partnership with Fort Folly and Elder from Pabineau First Nation. This is a true honor and we are so grateful for our community partners!
