return from NYC Maker Faire
The Engineering Brightness students at RHS (Beth Stevens, Kaleigh
Bourgeois, Megan Mersereau, Skyelar Ables, Lauren Daigle and Braeden
MacDougall) just returned from the World Maker Faire in NYC with teachers Chris
Ryan and Ian Fogarty. The students were invited to present what they learned
while designing and building lights for the 1.3 billion people in the world who
live in Light Poverty.
Getting ready for the World Maker Faire required lots of preparation
through last year and over the summer. Students worked at school during the summer
break drafting sponsorship letters, which helped them hone their writing
skills. In addition to electrical engineering and 3D printing, they learned
about graphic arts and sewing in order to create the banners and table cloth
for the booth.
They spent two days at the NY Hall of Science chatting with a steady
stream of makers and visitors from all over the world, including many students and
teachers. It was particularly fun teaching younger students how to solder LEDs.
Their message of “the purpose of learning is to build capacity to
make the world better” was well received. Our students were so persuasive that
the New York Times interviewed them as part of a special full edition on
learning and the organizers of the World Maker Faire awarded the Engineering
Brightness students with an Editors Choice Award.
Many of the makers commented about moving to New Brunswick for our
great education system that embraces inclusion and the work we are doing to
embed the #teachSDG movement.
Thank you to Brilliant Labs, The Optimist Club, The Association of
Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick, The Lions Club, the
Town of Riverview, Riverview High School, and Anglophone East for their
generous support in helping making this happen.
